Game Two: GC 12, Ferrum 7

GREENSBORO—In the second game of a USA South doubleheader, the Greensboro College softball team avenged earlier defeat with a 12-7 victory over visiting Ferrum College.

Starting pitcher Jamie Pittman (6-3) earned the victory for The Pride (21-10, 9-5).  Pittman helped her cause from the plate, with a 1-for-3, 4 RBI performance which included a double to left field.  Jenee Johnson (2-3, RBI, 2 runs), Lauren Manning (1-of-3, 2 RBI, triple) and Kelly Cooper (2-3) also had multiple hit performances for GC.

The Panthers (17-12, 5-7) scored four runs to open the game, with two outs in the first inning.  Wendy Hunt’s single to center field, scored Kathleen Gulino, who had reached on a single, for the 1-0 lead.  Jenny Perdue followed with another single, this time to left, scoring Trica Moore.  Ferrum’s Krystal Ellis hit a bases clearing double to centerfield, scoring Perdue and Hunt for the 4-0 advantage.

GC rallied in the home half of the first two cut the lead by half.  Pittman hit a fly ball to right field, scoring Jennifer Simms from third base, and Johnson from second, to cut the deficit to 4-2.

Ferrum scored one run in the second inning, pushing their lead to 5-2, when Mary Greenway manufactured a Panthers run by singling to reach, stealing second and third, and scoring on a ground out by Jami Reed.

The Pride broke the game opened in the second inning with seven runs. The first run of the inning scored when Joy Daniels was struck a pitch, with the bases loaded, scoring Leigh Ann Cardwell.  With Johnson’s patience at the plate, a walk scored Clack from third for a 5-4 Ferrum lead.  A second hit batter--this time when Manning was struck-- tied the game at 5-5 when Cooper came home.  Yet the biggest play of the inning came when Pittman doubled down the left field line for GC, scoring Johnson and Daniels for a 7-5 advantage. Katie-Meaghan Anderson reached on a fielder’s choice for The Pride, scoring Manning from third.  The final Pride run of the inning came when catcher Bailey Cotton drove home Pittman from third base on a grounder for the 9-5 advantage.

The Panthers added runs in both the fourth and fifth, to narrow the gap to 9-7.  In the fourth, Greenway scored her second run for Ferrum, this time with a single to the shortstop, and stealing second.  With Greenway in scoring position, Reed singled to right field to score her teammate.  In the fifth, a double to left field by Krystal Ellis, her second of the game, scored Perdue from first base.  Unlike the first game, Ellis’ doubles were the only extra-base hits for Ferrum.

GC added three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Manning reached the basepads on a fielder’s choice that scored Daniels from third.  Pittman reached on an error by Panthers third baseman Gulino, scoring Jennifer Simms and Johnson for the final runs of the contest and the final 12-7 margin.

GREENSBORO—The Greensboro College (20-10, 8-5) dropped the opening game of a two-game set with USA South conference foe Ferrum College 5-4 at Salvation Army Field.

Whitney Williams led GC at the plate, going 1-of-4 , with an RBI, and a run scored. Margaret Hamm (1-3, 2 RBI) and Jennifer Sherrill (1-3) were the only two Pride batters with extra base hits.

A triple to right field by Ferrum’s May Greenway opened up the game.  Greenway came home on the ensuing at-bat with a sacrifice fly to center by Jami Reed.  The second Panthers run came to the plate after reaching on a double, Kathleen Gulino came home on a fielding error.

In the second, GC cut the lead in half, when Sherrill reached on her lone hit of the game, a double to left field.  An error by Gulino at third base allowed Sherrill to cut the Ferrum lead to 2-1.

The Panthers scored three runs in the home half of the third, as Greenway again struck for an extra base hit.  This time a double to left field, and a wild pitch on the next at-bat, put Greenway in scoring position.  Reed followed with a single to first base, scoring her second RBI of the game, and a 3-1 lead.  Gulino cleared the bases for Ferrum with a triple to center field, and scoring Reed.  The final run of the game for the Panthers scored when an error allowed Gulino to reach home safely.

The Pride also added three runs in the third inning.  With two runners on, and one out, a single by Williams scored teammate Lauren Manning from second.  Hamm followed with a double to left field, scoring Williams and Hamm for the 5-4 Ferrum lead.

Despite having two runners in scoring position from the fifth inning onward, GC was unable to capitalize off the opportunity, dropping the game by a 5-4 final.

Pride pitcher Kristen Slade fanned six batters and walked one Panther.
