2005 Softball Tournament
CNU Shuts Out Averett, 2-0

Raleigh, N.C. -- Melissa Prewitt threw a complete game shutout to lead Christopher Newport over Averett, 2-0, in a USA South Tournament game at the Buffaloe Creek Athletic Park on Saturday.

Prewitt--who had a short rest after throwing seven innings against Methodist--struck out seven Cougars and allowed six hits. In the first inning, Andrea Rohde knocked in C.J. McQueen, who singled to lead off the game, for the game-winning run. McQueen went 3-4 in the game for the Captains. CNU scored an unearned run in the third frame.

For Averett, which was eliminated for the tournament, Katie Jimmo and Melanie  Gilbert both collected two hits. Cougar hurler Brittany Estep allowed five hits and struck out six Captains in the contest.
