The Christopher Newport Captains
(32-7) rode the momentum of a thrilling semifinal victory over Averett
into the championship match of the 2004 USA South Athletic Conference Tournament
and defeated Greensboro 30-25, 30-19, 30-26 to win its third conference
tournament championship in the last four seasons.
The loss snapped a 12-match Pride
winning streak. For Greensboro (27-10), Lauren Smith recorded 13
kills, while Katie Smith recorded 12 kills and nine digs.
Tricia Nelson recorded 14 kills to
pace the Captains, followed by Amber Bradshaw with 12 kills and Erin Bradshaw
with 10 kills. Brittany Collins added 40 assists and four service aces,
while Jenna Williams recorded 13 digs.
Collins, Nelson and Amber Bradshaw
represented Christopher Newport on the All-Tournament, as did Katie
Smith and Lauren Smith from Greensboro. Also selected to the
All-Tournament team was Courtney Peters from Averett and Erin Bryant from
North Carolina Wesleyan. Collins was selected as the tournament Most Valuable
Player.

Top-seeded Greensboro used its dominating
play at the net to defeat fourth-seeded North Carolina Wesleyan 30-21,
30-19, 30-17 in Saturday's first semifinal match of the 2004 USA South
Athletic Conference Tournament at Methodist. Offensively, Greensboro had
a tremendous .485 hitting percentage as two players reached double-figures
in kills.
The Pride received a dominating performance
from 2004 USA South Player of the Year Katie Smith, who recorded
a whopping 23 kills and three blocks for a .690 hitting percentage. In
addition, Lauren Smith recorded a sizzling .800 hitting percentage
with 12 kills and three blocks.
For North Carolina Wesleyan, Erin
Bryant recorded nine kills, while Kendra Brewer added seven kills. |
