Greensboro
2, CNU 1 (PKs), USA South Championship Match
Natalie Henderson's (Southwest Guilford HS) overtime shoot-out goal
was the game-winner as Greensboro College defeated Christopher Newport,
2-1, in the USA South Tournament championship game at Pride Field on Saturday.
Henderson was the last of 10 shoot-out shooters.
With the win, GC advances to the NCAA tournament for the second straight
season.
The score was 1-1 after 90 minutes. The teams could not decide the match
in 20 minutes of OT play, which forced the penalty kick shoot-out.
After a scoreless first half, CNU scored in the 56th minute. Shannon Crane
tallied on a Captain counter attack that was assisted by Ashleigh Dota.
The Pride countered 11 minutes later. Kym Maher headed the ball
past CNU keeper Kasey Davenport (6 saves). Randi Brown earned the assist.
The Captains had a great opportunity to win the match in the 84th minute,
but Brown made a sliding save on a Captain shot.
Pride goalkeeper Keri Wells made 9 saves. She was named the tournament
MVP.

Jessica Upchurch
scored two goals to lead Greensboro College (13-3-2) to a 3-1 win over
Chowan (9-10) in a USA South semifinal match.
The Pride hosts CNU
in the USA South Championship match on Saturday at 2 p.m. The winner advances
to the NCAA tournament.
The Pride built a 2-0
lead at halftime, but the Braves scored in the 60th minute to put a scare
on the host team. Upchurch's second tally in the 87th minute sealed the
win.
GC's Kym Maher scored
in the 6th minute to give The Pride a 1-0 lead. Amanda McGlaughlin
earned the assist. The home team made it 2-0 in the 43rd minute when Natalie
Henderson assisted Upchurch. GC controlled first half action and out-shot
the Braves, 9-1, in the first 45 minutes.
Chowan got on the board
in the 60th minute. Ashley Holt headed in a corner kick from Lisa Knieriemen,
who earned the assist.
Chowan's Christine
Horne had 9 saves. GC's Keri Wells played the first 45 minutes and earned
the victory. Kristen McGuire played the second half. Neither Pride
keeper was credited with a save.
The Pride, which set
a new program high for wins with 13, faces CNU in the USA South championship
game on Saturday. Kickoff is 2 p.m. at Pride Field.

Jessica Upchurch
scored
two goals and passed for one assist to lead Greensboro College (12-3-2,
7-1 USA South) to a 4-0 win over Chowan (8-9, 5-3) at Pride Field on Friday.
With the victory, The
Pride earned at least a share of the conference championship. GC also matched
program bests for wins (12) and shut outs (9)--both set in the 2001 season.
Upchurch scored in
the 24th minute after placing a Brave turnover into the goal. She tallied
a little more than one minute later off a corner kick. Shannon Kelly
got her first of two assists on the play. The Braves trailed, 2-0, at halftime.
Freshman Stephanie
Keough scored Kelly in the 48th minute. Natalie Henderson (Southwest
Guilford HS) recorded the game's final score in the 77th minute. Amanda
McGlaughlin and Upchurch earned assists on the play.
GC's Keri Wells
(one
save) and Kristen McGuire shared the shutout. Chowan's Emily Warthan
stopped 10 shots. The Pride out-shot CC, 20-3.

Keough recorded a hat trick to lead Greensboro College to a 5-0 win
at Peace College in Raleigh on Tuesday. Keough scored GC's first, fourth
and fifth tallies in the USA South match.
Shannon Kelly and
Kym Maher also scored for The Pride, which out-shot Peace, 21-2. Maher,
Brooke
DeWitt and Natalie Henderson passed for assists for GC. The
visitors led, 2-0, at halftime.
Kristen McGuire
and
Keri Wells shared the shutout for Greensboro. Each keeper had one save.

Senior Kym Maher
scored
in the first minute of overtime as Greensboro College beat the University
of the South, 3-2, at Pride field on Saturday. Stephanie Keough
assisted on the game winner.
GC sent the match to
extra time in stunning fashion as Keough tied the game at 2-2 with just
one second left in regulation play.
Keough also had the
game's first score 56 seconds into the match. Fellow freshman Randi
Brown earned the assist. Yet Sewanee tallied in the 11th and 13th minute
to take a 2-1 lead.
GC goalkeeper Keri
Wells (1 save), however, shut out the Tigers in the second half
and overtime and earned the victory. Kristen McGuire played the
first 45 minutes, allowed 2 goals and grabbed 2 saves.

Leigh Leavitt scored
in the 103rd minute to lift CNU to a 2-1 double overtime win at Pride Field
on Saturday. Ashley Glover and Shelley Rusnak assisted on the game-winning
tally.
The Pride scored 15
minutes into the match when Justina Sharkey recorded her first goal
of the season. Sharkey scored on a rebound after CNU keeper Kasey Davenport
(7 saves) made a save on a shot by Amanda McGlaughlin.
GC was seconds away
from a win--and control of the USA South women's soccer race--until the
Captains scored with at the 89:40 mark. CNU's Liz Thuma put back a rebound
after Keri Wells (2 saves) made a fine save on a previous shot.
The Pride loss means
that four teams--GC, Methodist, CNU and Chowan--all have one defeat in
conference play. Greensboro has remaining matches at Ferrum, at Peace and
against Chowan at Pride Field.

Visiting Greensboro College beat Maryville, 3-0, on Sunday and snapped
a four-game Lady Scots’ unbeaten streak. The win was The Pride's second
straight.
The non-conference loss drops Maryville’s record to 6-7 overall this season.
The Pride improved to 8-2-2.
Greensboro took the early 1-0 advantage with an Amanda McGlaughlin
header off a Shannon Kelly corner kick at the 19:52 mark of the
opening half. Then, just less than five minutes later, Natalie Henderson
(Colfax,
NC/Southwest Guilford) scored on a penalty kick after a foul was called
in the box to give The Pride a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
Stephanie
Keough headed in a Justina Sharkey pass with 22:25 remaining
in the contest to finish off the scoring for the visitors.

GC out shot visiting
W&L, 7-5 and in the first half, 4-1. Yet the Generals only first half
shot resulted in goal. Anne Wiltshire scored in the 23rd minute on a breakaway
and pass from Kelley Zagol.
The match's final tally came
in the 76th minute. General Fontaine Marcoux headed the ball past GC keeper
Keri
Wells (2 saves) for the score. Blair Haws assisted on the scoring play.
The Pride had 4 corner

(6-1-2, 3-0) beat North Carolina Wesleyan, 6-2, in a USA South match on
Thursday. The Southwest Guilford High School graduate tallied The Pride’s
fourth and sixth goals. She also assisted Shannon O’York on the game-winning
goal in the 38th minute.
Amanda McGlaughlin
also scored two times for Greensboro. Her goals were the first two for
The Pride, which led 4-0 at halftime. Megan Nutt had GC’s other
score. Stephanie Keough, Jessica Upchurch and Shannon Kelly
all had assists for the green and white.
Keri Wells played
the first half in goal for GC and earned the win. Lauren Lewendowski
minded the net for the last 45 minutes and allowed two goals. Neither Pride
keeper made a save. GC out-shot NCWC (1-9, 1-1), 31-5. The
win was GC’s fourth straight and ran The Pride's unbeaten string to five
games.
