Natalie Henderson's (Southwest Guilford HS) overtime shoot-out goal was the game-winner as Greensboro College defeated Christopher Newport, 2-1, in the USA South Tournament championship game at Pride Field on Saturday. Henderson was the last of 10 shoot-out shooters.

With the win, GC advances to the NCAA tournament for the second straight season. 

The two teams were tied 1-1 after 90 minutes. The teams could not decide the match in 20 minutes of OT play, which forced the penalty kick shoot-out. 

After a scoreless first half, CNU scored in the 56th minute. Shannon Crane tallied on a Captain counter attack that was assisted by Ashleigh Dota

The Pride countered 11 minutes later. Kym Maher headed the ball past CNU keeper Kasey Davenport (6 saves). Randi Brown earned the assist.

The Captains had a great opportunity to win the match in the 84th minute, but Brown made a sliding save on a Captain shot. 

Pride goalkeeper Keri Wells made 9 saves. She was named the tournament MVP.

Greensboro 3, Chowan 1 Box Score  Webcast Archive

Jessica Upchurch scored two goals to lead Greensboro College (13-3-2) to a 3-1 win over Chowan (9-10) in a USA South semifinal match. 

The Pride built a 2-0 lead at halftime, but the Braves scored in the 60th minute to put a scare on the host team. Upchurch's second tally in the 87th minute sealed the win.

GC's Kym Maher scored in the 6th minute to give The Pride a 1-0 lead. Amanda McGlaughlin earned the assist. The home team made it 2-0 in the 43rd minute when Natalie Hendreson assisted Upchurch. GC controlled first half action and out-shot the Braves, 9-1, in the first 45 minutes.

Chowan got on the board in the 60th minute. Ashley Holt headed in a corner kick from Lisa Knieriemen, who earned the assist. 

Chowan's Christine Horne had 9 saves. GC's Keri Wells played the first 45 minutes and earned the victory. Kristen McGuire played the second half. Neither Pride keeper was credited with a save.

The Pride, which set a new program high for wins with 13, faces CNU in the USA South championship game on Saturday. Kickoff is 2 p.m. at Pride Field. 

Christopher Newport 1, Methodist 0 Box Score Webcast Archive

Liz Thuma scored the game's only goal in the 61st minute as Christopher Newport (15-5) defeated Methodist (12-6-1), 1-0, in a USA South match at Pride Field on Friday.

The score occurred after Monarch goalkeeper Keri La Salla (6 saves) came out to get a loose ball. LaSalla mishandled the ball and Thuma tallied into an empty net.
 

CNU's Shelley Rusnak (#13) and Methodist's Teri Almond (#2) took part in a defensive battle won by the Captains, 1-0, in Friday's second semifinal match.

CNU outshot MC 14-5. Captain goalkeeper Kasey Davenport stopped 2 shots. 

Christopher Newport advances to the USA South championship game. The teams meet on Saturday at 2 p.m. on Pride Field.
