Greensboro College women’s basketball
finished 16-9 and tied for second place in the conference last year. The
Pride's improvement was the fourth best among all NCAA Division III women's
basketball teams.
“We are hoping to finish even better
this year, we have a lot of young talent, and a hopeful future ahead of
us," stated GC Head Coach Jason Tuggle.
GC returns 10 letter winners from
last year's eye opening season. Perhaps giving Tuggle's team motivation,
the other USA South coaches picked The Pride to finish fourth in the conference.
Since this year’s team is young and
does not have any seniors, Tuggle expects that someone will step
up and lead the team to success. The 2003-04 team has 5 juniors, 5 sophomores
and 4 freshmen.
The Pride's leading scorer last year
was Chirstina Daniels. She averaged 14.6
points per game as a freshman and was a second team all-conference pick.
Returning in the backcourt with Daniels is junior point guard Davenna
Brown. She averaged 7 points and 3.6 assists per contest last and
earned conference tournament team honors last year.
In the front court, sophomore Sally
Rice returns after averaging 9 points and 9 rebounds for The Pride.
Fellow post player April Hall returns. The
sophomore shot 54-percent from the field as a freshman.
Keona Tisdale,
Katrina
Robinson and Amanda
Currie return provide depth at the guard position. Returning forwards
from last years are Adanna McDowell, Jamie
Funk, and Amanda Clark will battle
for playing time in the front court. With GC's expected depth, don't be
surprised if Tuggle uses 3-guard lineups and other options.
The recruiting class brought in three
strong freshman who will play with The Pride: Paris
Buckner, Angelia Hurst, and Ruthanne
Clark. Clark is a transfer from Elon University, who came to play
volleyball at GC. She has freshman eligibility to play basketball and was
picked to the USA South second team in the recently completed volleyball
season.
The team’s goals and expectations
this year are just to improve and be competitive day in and day out, and
to better their record and hopefully make a run at the conference title
this year.
“Since we are young and will not
lose any players in the next two years that it will be interesting to see
who steps up and shows leadership”, said Coach Tuggle.
