GC Women's Hoops Posts Best Season
Ever
The Greensboro College women's basketball
team posted the best season in program history in 2004-05.
GC finished the year 21-7 and 12-2
in USA South conference games. The Pride won both the conference regular
season and tournament titles. Greensboro then advanced to the NCAA Division
III women's basketball tournament second round. Of GC's losses, just four
came against D-III competition.
Coach Jason Tuggle's team
offered the optimal mix of youth and experience. Four seniors: DaVenna
Brown, Adanna McDowell, Jamie Funk and Amanda Currie provided
both leadership and skill.
Yet Sophomore Kim Enoch recorded
eye-popping statistics and received a number of individual accolades. She
scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds per game. Enoch recorded double-double
for points and rebounds in 17 of the 22 games she played. She earned USA
South first team honors, was named conference tournament MVP, and earned
a spot on the D3hoops.com South Region first
team.
Juniors Christina Daniels
(11 points per game) and Sirlena Moore (10 PPG, 7 RPG) received
USA South second team recognition. Greensboro also received fine play from
Brown at point guard, as she led the team with 129 assists. Ruthannne
Clark did the little things--defense, steals and getting loose balls--that
don't show up in box scores. Funk had a knack for making big shots and
grabbing key rebounds.
Following GC's first outright regular
season title, The Pride defeated Shenandoah, Peace and Methodist on its
way to a second conference crown and trip to the NCAA tournament.
Surprisingly, The Pride's biggest
scare came in its quarterfinal matchup against 8th seeded Shenandoah. GC
trailed 56-43 with 6:09 remaining. Greensboro then went on a 15-2
run in less than two minutes to tie the game at 58 with 4:17 on the clock.
A jump shot by Funk put GC ahead for good at 60-58 with 2:39 left. Enoch
scored 26 points and had 18 rebounds in the game.
GC's strong resume earned the club
a first round bye and a game at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.
Entering the TU game, GC had won six straight 13 of its last 14 games.
For the first 20 minutes, it appeared as if The Pride would won win its
first NCAA women's basketball tournament NCAA game. Greensboro led by as
many as 12 points. The Pride led 43-39 at halftime.
Greensboro trailed by just four points,
60-56, with 7:55 left. Yet Trinity forced 22 turnovers and had a big second
half and won, 79-63. Enoch scored a game-high 21 points for The Pride.
Clark added 11 points for the visitors.
"We let one get away but I think
our starting five was better," said Tuggle. "We put Greensboro College
women's basketball on the map and I expect us to be in this tournament
again soon."
A wise man said this year's GC women's
hoops team went "where no one had gone before," using the Star Wars analogy.
Don't be surprised if this group reaches a new galaxy in 2005-06.
