Review of the 2000 Season
The Greensboro College Women’s Lacrosse team  finished the season with a record of 6-7, and played the toughest schedule in the history of the program. They faced St. Mary’s College, which was ranked 13th in Division III early in the season, and Limestone, which finished 6th in Division II.  Winning five out of their last six games, GC  beat the record for most wins in a season. And the future certainly is bright: All of this year’s award winners—and the majority of the women’s lacrosse roster—will be sophomores in 2001.

The Pride had a roster of just 14 players and lost some team members due to injuries. But whether it was the pain of shin splints, sore knees, turned ankles, a broken arm, or in one case, getting several blood transfusions just so she could finish up her senior year—these ladies knew the meaning of sacrifice. Not surprisingly, after the season  Coach Mike Lackemacher thanked the GC athletic training staff at the athletic convocation.

Erin Howard closed her career with GC. The senior from Canton, CT recorded 38 goals and eight assists in her four years with The Pride. The 1999 Craven E. Williams Award winner will be missed on the field and within the GC community.

Two freshmen made a huge impact in 2000. Lorin Smith finished the season with 49 goals and 15 assists. She broke the single-season scoring record with 64 points.

Stephanie Schaeffer, however, was the team’s most valuable player. The goaltender sacrificed her body to keep the team close in many games. Her attitude was outstanding.  She saved 27 shots against Limestone and also broke the record for the most saves in a game this year, with 30 against Bridgewater College.
