GC Defeats Methodist 13-6; Plays CNU for DIAC Tournament Championship

WINCHESTER, Va. - Second seeded Greensboro College became the second finalist Saturday afternoon in the Dixie Conference Tournament with a 13-6 victory over No. 3 Methodist College.

The Pride's win sets up a rematch of last year's Dixie Conference Tournament championship game between GC and Christopher Newport University on Sunday at Shentel Stadium on the campus of Shenandoah University. Greensboro defeated Christopher Newport 8-6 in the inaugural tournament last season. However, GC will have revenge on its side Sunday afternoon as the Captains captured the 2002 regular season title on the last weekend of the season with a 12-8 victory over the Pride. The loss was Greensboro's first to a Dixie Conference opponent since losing to Shenandoah in the 1999 season finale.

GC (11-5) wasted little time in the matchup against the first year Monarchs (5-8); the Pride scored its first goal 24 seconds into the game and used three goals in the final four minutes of the first half to take a 6-3 lead into the halftime lockerroom.

The Pride was led by freshman Yvette Jones (Stephentown, NY/Colonie HS), who scored 5 goals. Freshman Laura Henry (Clifton, VA/Centreville HS) added three more goals for GC.

The final 30 minutes brought more of the same as Greensboro answered each Methodist run with a goal of its own, ending any chance of an MC upset. The Monarchs would close to within one at 6-5 when Emily Neilsen scored on a free position shot with 26:29 to play, but they would get no closer.
