GC Women’s Lacrosse Again
Wins Dixie Conference Title

The GC women’s lacrosse team posted an impressive 12-5 record. The Pride once again surpassed their single season win record, and captured its second straight DIAC title.

Greensboro avenged an earlier loss to CNU by beating the Captains, 10-9 in overtime, at the Dixie Tournament in Winchester, Va. Freshman Laura Henry scored the game-winner for The Pride.

In a season that also produced a record 10-game GC winning streak, there were many individual highlights. The most  notable marks were those set by Lorin Smith, the team and DIAC MVP.

Smith has rewritten The Pride record book: She scored 61 goals and had 26 assists for a total of 87 points this season—surpassing her own scoring marks. Lorin now holds the record for most goals in a season, most assists in a season, and—as a junior—holds the record for career points with 222.

“Lorin is a true inspiration to everyone involved in the program,” said GC Coach Tammy Dixon.

The Pride dominated conference honors. In addition to Smith, midfielder Rebecca Beninghove was first team all-conference  and DIAC tournament MVP. Stephanie Schaeffer was first team all-conference goalie, and made the Dixie tournament team.

Laura Henry was on the DIAC tournament team. Fellow freshman Yvette Jones, an honorable mention all-conference member, was on the Dixie tournament team, and won the DIAC Rookie-of-the-Week twice.

Defender Leah Taylor made first team all-conference defense, and was on the DIAC tournament team.

Smith, Beninghove, Schaeffer, Henry and Taylor were picked for the Southeast regional team that will compete in a national tournament sponsored by US Lacrosse.

Finally, Dixon was nominated for South Region Coach-of-the-Year in May.
