Review of the 2000 Season |
| The Greensboro College baseball team had
a disappointing 10-25-3 season. The 2000 campaign was unlike anything Pride
baseball had ever experienced.
In a strange season, GC had an amazing three ties in its first six games. Greensboro began the year 4-1-3. One of its early wins was against Emory University, which qualified for the NCAA Division III World Series. Greensboro suffered close defeats to North Carolina Wesleyan and tied Salisbury State University—two NCAA playoff teams. Then the ball stopped bouncing GC’s way.
Nine of its losses were by one or two runs. In Dixie Conference play, The
Pride suffered five defeats by two or fewer runs.
More importantly, of the 2000 GC baseball seniors, all but two walked across the stage this month to receive a diploma on time. It should be noted that five baseball players, the most of any Greensboro College team, were nominated for Academic All-American. Kazu Nagai was selected Dixie Conference Rookie-of-the-Week in March and—had he avoided the injury bug—probably would have made a run at Dixie Conference Rookie-of-the-Year. Nagai, who hit over .400 most of the season, was voted team rookie-of-the-year. David Baker led the baseball team in nearly every offensive category and was unchallenged as the choice for Most Valuable Player. Baker hit .370 for The Pride in 154 at bats. He scored 36 runs, had 12 doubles and stole 11 of 14 bases...all team highs. He was also nominated for the All-South Region Team.
