| The Greensboro College baseball team
had a number of noteworthy accomplishments in 2003. Fielding a young roster
dominated by underclassmen, The Pride baseball finished 13-20 overall.
The Pride faced 7 of the nation’s top-25 teams. In DIAC play--in the nation’s
toughest NCAA Division III conference—GC went 6-6.
Its 6 DIAC wins were the most since 1996. The team
set program marks for fewest strikeouts (178), fewest errors (58), and
best fielding percentage (.954).
The Pride also had four All-DIAC players, the most
honorees in six seasons. Rick Reineke
(.382 batting average, 13 doubles), Kevin Mong
(.331 and 9 home runs) and Kasey Siepe
(.369 and 22 stolen bases) earned second team Dixie recognition. Freshman
Sean
Mullaney (3-0 in conference) was the DIAC Rookie-Pitcher-of-the-Year.
Says Coach Ken
Carlyle: “Our schedule was difficult: We played the defending national
champs and a number of ranked opponents. We jelled as a team, however,
over the course of regular-season play. We won 4 straight conference games,
and had two straight DIAC series sweeps. The fact that young guys were
key components to this success bodes well for GC baseball next year--and
beyond.”
The Pride closed the year winning a 3-game series
with SCAD. In the first game of the series against the Bees, freshman Jeremy
Foster pitched a no-hitter for The Pride. |
