PRIDE AND BOBCATS SPLIT DH

GAME ONE: Frostburg 7, Greensboro 4

GREENSBORO—In the opening game of the double dip, Frostburg State earned its first win of the season by defeating Greensboro College 7-4 in nine innings of a scheduled seven inning doubleheader.  The winning runs came when Bobcats designated hitter Andrew Speights drove a three-run home run over the right field wall in the top of the ninth inning.

The GC (3-5) defense continued to improve its support of pitchers, turning two double plays in the game, despite the offense allowing 13 runners to be stranded on base.  Frostburg State’s Rob DeSanto earned the decision, while his mound counterpart and Pride reliever Josh Maras falls to 0-1.

A 4-4 tie in the top of the ninth inning, Pride reliever Josh Maras committed a two-base throwing error, moving Chris Baugher into scoring position.  GC followed with an intentional walk of Lance Williams, who had homered off the Pride in the top of the seventh, choosing to face designated hitter Andrew Speights.  Speights sent a Maras pitch towering over the right field wall to give Frostburg a 7-4 lead heading to the bottom of the ninth.

In the top of the seventh inning with two Frostburg State runners on, and one out, right fielder Lance Williams sent a towering shot to over the left centerfield wall for a 4-0 Bobcats advantage.  Williams, who was 1-for-3 on the afternoon, added to a 1-0 Frostburg State lead that was assumed in the third inning.  In the third inning, Mike Gitzen singled home Andrew Speights.

The Pride tied the game in the bottom half of the seventh, scoring four runs on three hits to knot the game at 4-4.  The rally began with one out and  GC’s Zach Nichols got on base with a walk, and advanced to second on a balk by pitcher John Micklus.  Nichols would move to third, as The Pride’s Jeremy Morrison (2-5) grounded out for the second out of the inning.  Two batters later, with Brent Justice reaching after being hit by a pitch, Larry Lockhart (2-4, 1 run, 1 RBI) singled to left field for the first GC run of the game.  The Pride’s Kevin Mong followed with a single, and loaded the bases for Chad Alligood.  During the Alligood at-bat, Micklus would again committ a balk, moving Justice home and cutting the lead to 4-2

GC First baseman Chad Clark recorded the game-tying two RBI’s with a single to left field, driving in Mong and Lockhart for the final GC runs of the inning, sending the game to extra innings.

GAME TWO: Greensboro 7, Frostburg 1

GREENSBORO—GC starting pitcher Kevin Mong lost his bid for a no-hitter when Alan Peake, the second batter in the seventh inning, roped a single to left center for the only Bobcats hit of the game.  Mong finished with a complete game, one-hit shutout, striking out 8 Bobcat hitters.

Chad Clark kick-started the offense for GC (4-5) with a double to right field, where The Pride would string together three consecutive hits.  Clark (3-4, 3 runs, 2 doubles) moved to second on a single by Jesse Sutton, and would score the first run of the game on a base hit to left field by Taylor Kennedy.

In the fourth, Clark would reach  base as the leadoff hitter with a single into left field.  With one out, and Kennedy again at the plate with a runner in scoring position, a double that reached the right center field wall sent Clark home for a 2-0 Pride lead.

In the home half of the sixth inning, again in the leadoff position, Clark hit his second double of the game.  He would move to third on a grounder by Kennedy, and give The Pride a 3-0 advantage when on an error by Bobcats shortstop Mike Gitzen allowed Clark to score the unearned run.

GC would score another insurance run when Jeff Gregory scored from second base on a single to right field by Brent Justice, making the score 4-0.  On the second Frostburg State (1-3) error of the inning, this time by right fielder Justin Wilt, allowed Justice and teammate Larry Lockhart to cross the plate, as The Pride would lead 6-0.

Mong (3-4, 1 RBI) added to his own cause when he hit a single to right field, scoring Lockhart from second, for the final run of the game.
