GC 15, Old Westbury 1
GREENSBORO— Andrew Keever
threw five complete innings of no-hit baseball and helped Greensboro College
in a 15-1 victory over SUNY Old Westbury. Keever (2-1) struck out
nine Panther (0-1) batters, walk one, while allowing just the one
earned run.
SUNY Westbury’s starting
hurler Felix Tatis (0-1), would not enjoy the success of his mound counterpart,
allowing seven earned runs on eight hits, walking three, striking out three,
in just three complete innings of work.
Leading the way for The Pride
(7-6) at the plate was Brent Justice (3-for-5, 4 RBIs); Jesse Sutton (3-for-6,
RBI); and Chad Alligood (4-for-6, 2B), as GC combined for 17 hits.
Centerfielder Larry Lockhart was the only Pride player, other than
Justice, to register multiple RBIs, by driving in two, with a double and
1-for-3 in plate appearances.
The biggest inning for GC
came in the fifth, as The Pride would score six runs on five hits, and
take advantage of two Panther errors, en route to taking a 13-0 lead.
The first run came with a balk by George Pagan, sending Chad Alligood home.
A single Brent Justice scored Sutton for an 9-0 Pride lead, followed by
a Kevin Mong double to second that would bring home Lockhart.
With pinch hitter Chris Hewitt reaching on an error by Panthers
shortstop Darly Alcantara, scoring Mong for the final run of the inning.
SUNY Old Westbury (0-1) opened
their season with one run, coming in the top of the sixth inning, when
Jamie Quinn sent the ball deep to right field, breaking up the no-hitter
by starter AnDrew Keever. Darly Alcantara doubled to center
field for a second straight hit, sending Quinn across the plate.
The Pride scored two runs
in the opening inning, and would not look back. Jeremy Morrison,
who reached on a hit by pitch, would give GC a 1-0 lead on a wild pitch.
Lockhart walked, eventually manufacturing a run for The Pride by scoring
on a second wild pitch of the inning, and a 2-0 advantage.
In the following inning,
GC would put three runs on the board, this time the offense came with a
lead-off double by Chad Alligood. Jesse Sutton followed
with a hit to centerfield, and a third hit in three at-bats came with a
single by Jeff Gregory that would score Alligood for the games third
run. With shortstop Brent Justice at the plate, a single to
right field brough home the final two runs of the inning, with Gregory
and Sutton crossing the plate for a 5-0 Pride lead.
GC took a 7-0 lead in the
bottom of the third, scoring two runs on three hits. The first run
came with a Sutton hit to right field that drove in catcher Taylor Kennedy,
who reached on a single to left. The second run of the inning came
on a sacrifice fly to left field by Morrison which scored Alligood.
The final runs of the afternoon
came in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Jesse Sutton reached
on an error. Anthony Corona, who entered the game to play left field
in place of Morrison, sent a double down the left field line, to score
Bradon Stanford from second. Justice would single in the game’s final
run, with a hit to left field, bringing home Sutton for the 15-1 Pride
victory.
