GC 12, Old Westbury 2
GREENSBORO -- The Greensboro
College baseball team won for the fourth time in five games, following
a 12-2 victory over the visiting Suny Old Westbury Panthers at War Memorial
Stadium. The win gives GC a second two-game winning streak of the
season.
The Pride was led at the plate by
Jesse
Sutton, who went 2-for-3, 2 RBIs, and two runs scored along with Larry
Lockhart who was 2-for-4 and an RBI. Six other GC batters managed
one hit in the game, with Anthony Aversano only at-bat resulting
in a three-run homer.
The Pride's starting pitcher Kevin
Mong (2-1) departed after six complete innings, allowing four hits,
two walks, while striking out five Panther batters. Mound counterpart Zach
Flinn (0-1) of the Panthers left two innings earlier, after allowing seven
Pride hits, six earned runs, and three walks.
The Pride (8-6) managed two runs
over the first three innings of the game, the first as a result of Jeremy
Morrison being hit by a pitch, the second time in consecutive games
that Morrison led the game off by being hit. With a stolen base and
a wild pitch moving Morrison to third, GC took a 1-0 lead with a sacrifice
fly by Brent Justice.
In the third, another pitching mishap
would bring home Jeff Gregory. This time in a pick-off move,
an errant throw by Zach Flinn would allow Gregory to score from third base,
and up the lead to 2-0.
GC broke the game open in the third,
scoring four runs on five hits. A Jesse Sutton double off
the center field wall scored Taylor Kennedy for the first run of
the inning.
Jeff Gregory followed with a single that ricocheted
off Panther pitcher Flinn's leg, and wound up between first and second
base allowing Sutton and teammate Chad Alligood to move The Pride
lead to 5-0. The final GC run of the inning came on Flinn's third
wild pitch of the game, this time allowing Brent Justice to score
from third with two outs.
The Pride tacked on two more runs
in the home half of the fifth inning, with a Jesse Sutton two-run home
run over the right field wall, giving GC a 8-0 advantage.
GC scored its ninth run of the game,
and seventh in consecutive innings, when an error by Panther second baseman
Felix Tatis, moved Morrison to third base. Lockhart subsequently
drove in the batter with a fielder's choice, bringing Morrison home.
The Pride hit a second home run in
the home half of the eighth, this time a three-run shot off the bat of
Anthony
Aversano over the left field bleachers and Sarge's Army. Aversano's
first home run of the season, brought home Chris Hewitt and Larry
Lockhart for the 12-2 final.
