DANVILLE, Va. – Greensboro College swept a conference opening DH at Owen-Fulton Field on Saturday. GC won game one by an 11-2 tally and prevailed in game, 8-6, in 11 innings.

In game two, GC led 6-2 with two outs and no runners on base. However, Averett (4-10, 1-4 USA South) rallied with four runs in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings. Thomas Godinez reached on a walk and was pinch run for by Jeremy Rankin. A single by Richard Cole put runners on first and second before an error on the Pride (10-6, 2-0 USA South) shortstop loaded the bases. A second consecutive miscue by the shortstop scored Rankin to trim the lead to 6-3.

T.J. Bray followed with a single to third base for an RBI and Ken Kellum tied the game with another single down the left field line. Unfortunately for the Cougars, Greensboro added two runs in the top of the eleventh that Averett was unable to answer.

Travis Reynolds was given the loss in relief of starter Kenny Payne, who struck out 12 on the day. Bret Lyons, Pierce Steinruck, and Jason Inge all had three hits in the loss for the Cougars. The Cougars tallied 14 hits in the contest. Jeremy Morrison led the Pride with a 4-for-6 effort with two RBIs.

In game one, Averett allowed nine runs over the first four innings. Drake Shumate took the loss in four innings of work. Matt Graves led the way with a 2-for-4 effort. Brent Justice paced Greensboro with a 4-for-5 effort with three RBIs.

GC record 10-6, 2-0; Streak W4.
