Game One: GC 2, Shenandoah 1

GREENSBORO—In the opening game of the doubleheader with conference rival Shenandoah, the Greensboro College Pride won a pitcher’s duel 2-1 in seven innings.  The  victory at War Memorial Stadium kept The Pride in first place in the USA South rankings.

GC hurler AnDrew Keever (5-1) pitched a complete game. He scattered five hits, allowed one unearned run, walked one batter, and struck out two.  His mound counterpart and Shenandoah starter Jason Burgess (3-2) also threw a complete game, with six innings, allowing two runs, one earned, two walks and one strikeout.

Larry Lockhart was the only Pride batter with multiple hits (2-for-3, RBI), both singles.  Designated hitter Anthony Aversano, 1-for-2 with an RBI, joined Lockhart as the only Pride hitters with an RBI.

Shenandoah (10-8, 4-6) put two runners on in the second inning, with back-to-back singles to left field by Adam Duckett and Sam Fullerton.  Duckett scored two batters later when an error by GC second baseman Chad Alligood, the lone Pride error of the game, giving Shenandoah a 1-0 advantage.

GC matched the Hornets run in the home half of the third, when Jeremy Morrison scored after reaching on a walk.  Morrison scored from second on a hard single to left field by Lockhart.

In the fourth, The Pride’s Chad Alligood reached on a leadoff error, advancing to second.  Two batters later, designated hitter Anthony Aversano scored Alligood from third on a sacrifice fly, in what proved to be the game-winning RBI.

Game Two: Shenandoah 9, GC 5

GREENSBORO— In the second game of the doubleheader at War Memorial Stadium, Greensboro College lost its second game of the USA South conference schedule, with a 9-5 loss to Shenandoah.

Leading the way for GC from the plate was Larry Lockhart who went 2-for-5 with a double, RBI, and one run scored.  Also with multiple hits for GC was Chad Clark, 2-for-4, RBI.  Starting catcher Taylor Kennedy was 1-for-3, with 2 RBIs for The Pride.

Shenandoah (11-8, 5-6) took advantage of three GC errors in the first inning to assume a 2-0 lead.  A David Jenkins lead-off double to left, followed by an error by Pride shortstop Jeff Gregory allowing Daniel Ziccardy to move to second, allowed Jenkins to score from first base for a 1-0 Hornets lead.  Ziccardy scored two batters later, when an error by GC’s Chad Clark put Adam Duckett on first base, and a Shenandoah 2-0 lead.

GC (16-8, 6-2) rallied to score runs in both the first and second innings, and knotted the score at 2-2 heading into third.  Kevin Mong drove in The Pride’s first run, scoring Jeremy Morrison from second on a hard single past third base.  In the home half of the second, GC’s Chad Clark doubled to left field that bounced off the wall, scoring Jesse Sutton from first, and tying the game a 2-2.

The Pride took the lead in the third when Brent Justice lead off the inning with a single to center, followed by a Larry Lockhart double to center, scoring Justice.  Taylor Kennedy’s sacrifice fly to right field scored Lockhart, giving GC a 4-2 lead through three complete.

Shenandoah’s Bobby Anthony broke the game open in the fifth, when he sent a Kevin Mong pitch over the left field wall for a grand slam homerun, and a 7-4 lead.  Anthony’s home run was the third hit of the inning for the Hornets, who were trailing 4-3 after an RBI single to left by Duckett brought home Daniel Ziccardy.

The Pride managed just one more run over the remaining four innings of the game, when in the fifth Taylor Kennedy singled to center field, scoring Jeremy Morrison

Shenandoah closed out the game by scoring two runs in the sixth, again taking advantage of GC fielding errors, this time when Jesse Sutton dropped a fly ball in the outfield, scoring David Jenkins from third.  The final run of the game came when Daniel Ziccardy scored from third base on a fly ball to right field by Duckett.
