Shenandoah 8, GC 5

GREENSBORO,  N.C. — Despite a bases loaded rally in the home half of the ninth inning, the Greensboro College baseball team dropped its second game in a row to Shenandoah University 8-5 on Sunday at War Memorial Stadium.

The Pride (16-9, 6-3) hit two solo homers and tallied 12 hits on the afternoon.  Leading the way was Kevin Mong, 3-of-4, with an RBI and a  run scored.  Larry Lockhart also had a solid day at the plate for GC. He was 1-for-4 with a home run and and a run scored.  Catcher Adam Kennedy (2-for-3) was the only remaining Pride batter with mulitple hits. 

The GC bats were awake from the first inning, scoring two runs on three hits.  Jeremy Morrison led the game off with a single to center, followed by a Brent Justice who reached by an error.  Two batters later, Mong singled to centerfield and brought home the first GC run.  Chad Alligood followed with a single to center, that scored Kennedy and gave GC a 2-0 lead.

In the second, Jesse Sutton tripled to center bringing in Anthony Aversano home from first base.  The Sutton triple, his first of the season, gave The Pride a 3-0 advantage. 

A Hornet (13-8, 6-6) rally in the fourth inning, cut into the GC lead.  Beginning with a Sam Fullerton double to right field, followed by a single by Bobby Anthony that bounced towards the pitchers mound, combined with a walk, Shenandoah had the bases loaded.  Right fielder Matt McCormick’s single to left field scored Fullerton and Anthony, cutting the Pride lead to 3-2.

Shenandoah continued their hot batting, with three hits in the fifth inning, the biggest coming on a 3-run homerun to straight away center by designated hitter Sam Fullerton, giving the Hornets a 5-3 lead.  In the sixth, Shenandoah scored an additional run, with Danny Bowers doubled to right, stole third base, and advanced home with a double to right field by Matt McCormick.

GC answered with a run of their own in the home half of the sixth, with a Sutton solo home run to right field, that cut the deficit to 6-4.  The Pride got another solo home run, by Lockhart, which was his third of the season. GC trailed 6-5 heading into the eighth. 

The Hornets added an insurance run in the eighth, when Daniel Bowers stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error, eventually advancing home despite a hard throw from Lockhart in shallow center. The run gave Shenandoah a 7-5 lead. An error by Pride third baseman Justice allowed Daniel Ziccardy to advance to second, leading off the ninth.  A single to center field by Adam Duckett scored Ziccardy, and helping to seal the Hornets 8-5 victory.
