Season Finale: GC 17, Chowan 5

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Greensboro College baseball team closed out the 2005 campaign with a 17-5 win over Chowan College at War Memorial Stadium. The win gave GC a 24-16 record, the third most wins in the program's history.

The Pride scored 14 runs in the first inning, with five of the eight total hits coming in the form of extra base knocks. Jesse Sutton homered to right field, while Chad Clark (3-of-5, 3B, 2B) registered a triple and single while driving in three RBIs.

AnDrew Keever (8-2) earned the victory for GC, completing five innings, scattering six hits, two earned runs, while striking out three Braves batters. Tyler Combs threw the next three innings, while Jacob Clotfleter hurled the ninth for GC.

Each original batter in the Pride lineup managed at least one hit in the victory, with seven of the team’s 17 total hits were of the extra base variety.  Kevin Mong (3-5, 3 RBI, 2 doubles, two runs) led the way for GC at the plate.  Four GC batters drove in two RBIs, including Sutton, Chad Alligood, Larry Lockhart (3-5, 2 runs, 2B, SB, 2 RBI), and Brent Justice (2-4, 2 runs, SB, 2 RBI).

Chowan responded in the second when Matt Dize (3-4, 2 runs, HR, 3B, 2 RBI) homered to left center, bringing home Patrick Swift, making the score 14-2.

GC continued the onslaught in the home half of the second, with two runs on four hits.  Buddy Allen (2-4, 2 runs) singled to left field, followed by a single by Jeremy Morrison (2-4, 2 runs, RBI), and a third consecutive hit by Justice, scored Allen from third.  Lockhart singled to left field, loading the bases for Mong.  Mong’s sacrifice fly to center field brought home Morrison for the 16-2 advantage.

Following the Chowan coach being ejected between innings for arguing balls and strikes, The Pride added one run to the total for a 17-2 lead.  Brandon Stanford doubled to center field, scoring two batters later when Jeremy Morrison singled into left, for his second hit of the game.

A leadoff triple for Dize of the Braves, who scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Matt Gibbons, cut the GC lead to 17-3, through the home half of the sixth.
