| The Greensboro College baseball team had a benchmark season in 2006. GC's record of 27-16 tied the mark for wins by a Pride baseball team. GC advanced to the conference championship game for only the second time in program history, and set a new program mark with 10 USA South wins.
The Pride ranked 10th in the nation
in fielding percentage. In addition to defense, Greensboro led the USAS
in many categories, including runs, on-base percentage and home runs. GC
was 31st in the nation in home runs, and earned a regional ranking for
the first time since 1998.
Greensboro College earned eight all-conference
honors, including its second straight USAS MVP in Jess Maloney.
The junior first baseman led the conference in batting average and hits.
Joining Maloney on the conference's first team were third baseman Pat Burgess, catcher Taylor Kennedy,
second baseman Jeff Gregory and DH Chad Clark. Burgess, also
a junior, blasted a GC record 14 home runs for the green and white this
year. Senior Brent Justice recorded new program standards for runs
scored, total bases, and stolen bases. Burgess was sixth in the country
with 14 home runs.
The Pride defeated NCAA Division I and Ivy League member Brown University in an exciting game at First Horizon Park. GC bested regular season champion Methodist four times during the year. The Pride also knocked off three nationally-ranked teams, including Emory University, the former number one rated team.
GC lost a handful of players to graduation led by record-setting hurler AnDrew Keever. Yet a bulk
of the lineup will return to make a run at next year's USA South Conference
title.
