October 31 @ Jamieson Stadium Greensboro, NC - It wasn't the result The Pride hoped for on Saturday - after the program's first victory a week ago. Greensboro jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a 21-yard field goal by Brandon Brookshire. But Methodist ran off 30 points the rest of the first half and cruised to a 30-9 halftime advantage. The Pride - which did not get a first down the entire second half - allowed 444 yards by the Monarchs, including 295 on the ground. The Monarchs scored four touchdowns on runs and blocked a punt for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Mark Abbott made 16 tackles in the loss and Ricky Brigman added 14. October 24 @ Jamieson Stadium October 24, 1998 Newport News, VA -- It's almost hard to believe it took 16 games and almost two years for Marion Kirby to get his first Gatorade bath as the Greensboro College football coach. It was well worth the wait as The Pride handled the Apprentice School, 28-12, in Newport News, VA on Saturday afternoon.. There was nothing sweeter to watch as the North Carolina coaching legend was completely overtaken by the cool surprise that seemed to cascade down upon him forever. Kirby has guided the program since its infancy a year-and-a-half ago. And so, the boys capped off the win in celebratory fashion, singing The Pride fight song in unison to the 100 gathered Pride fans, much to their delight and surprise. It's something the boys have been working on for four weeks now, together after practice every Thursday afternoon with assistant coach Mike Working. "We wanted to be ready for that just in case it happened one of these weeks," said Kirby. Less than four minutes later, The Pride was at it again, capitalizing on a created opportunity by the defense and great field position. With a first down at the Apprentice 30-yard line, Wilder connected with TE Rob Seton - who was wide open on the left side of the defense. Seton caught the lofted pass and ran into the endzone untouched. Brookshire added one of his four extra points on the day. Wilder and Seton weren't done. After the Pride defense bent a little but did not break, Greensboro got the ball back at its own 30-yard line with four minutes left in the second quarter. Wilder led Greensboro on an eight-play, 70-yard drive that resulted in the same touchdown pass. This time, Wilder connected with Seton from 22 yards out. Seton was once again wide open on the left side and went into the endzone untouched. Apprentice came back with a touchdown in the third to close the gap to 21-6, but The Pride closed the door for its first victory in school history as Wilder ran in from two-yards out on a bootleg with 11:11 remaining in the final quarter. It was the first time Kirby has been able to get on the bus with a smile on his face and a bit less stress on his mind. Once again, he'll be hard at work Sunday afternoon, preparing for next Saturday's game against Methodist College - this time in search of his first home victory October 17 @ Jamieson Stadium Greensboro, NC - For The Pride, the third quarter has been nothing short of a nightmare this season. Greensboro took a 14-7 lead into the locker room, only to give up 14 points in the third quarter in losing for the 15th straight time. Greensboro needed just :21 to score on its second possession of the afternoon as Daryl Gholson scampered in from seven yards out. The Dolphins came back to tie the score before The Pride put together a six-play, 75-yard drive, highlighted by a Ricky McAuley seven-yard run to give The Pride a 14-7 lead at the half. JU put together two scoring drives to open the second half and took a 21-14 lead. The Pride answered, driving the ball to the Jacksonville two-yard line. But on second and goal, Jason Layman fumbled. Two plays later, Jacksonville's Jon Underhill ran the ball 98 yards to pay dirt to give the Dolphins an insurmountable 28-14 lead with 9:56 remaining in the fourth. Tim Sneed - playing in his first game since breaking his finger in the preseason - caught five passes for 76 yards. October 10 @ Jamieson Stadium Greensboro, NC - The Pride nearly avenged its 60-3 blowout to the Bobcats last season, but fell short of the upset bid. Jason Layman scampered 65 yards on the second play from scrimmage and Brandon Brookshire added a 28-yard field goal in the second quarter and Greensboro went into halftime with a 10-0 lead. However, the Bobcats struck twice in the third quarter to take a 14-10 lead. With 7:00 remaining in the fourth quarter, Greensboro had a first and goal at the Bobcat five-yard line but couldn't convert it into a touchdown and settled for a Brookshire 21-yarder to close the gap to 14-13. The Pride got two more opportunities to score, but couldn't get within field goal range. Jason Layman rushed for 101 yards on 21 carries and Rob Seton caught four passes for 66 yards. October 3 @ Emory & Henry College Abingdon, VA - Daryl Gholson and Jason Layman both had career days rushing the ball, but so did E&H running back Oliver Jordan. Jordan rushed for 310 yards on 16 carries and scored four times - breaking the E&H school record for yards in a game. Jordan opened the game with a 69-yard scoring dash to put the Wasps up 7-0. The Pride countered with a six play, 59-yard drive capped off by a Brandon Brookshire 22-yard field goal. The Pride's lone touchdown of the day came on a 10-yard run by Layman, highlighting a nine-play, 71-yard drive that cut the E&H lead to 13-10 in the second quarter. Layman rushed for 98 yards while Gholson set the single game scoring record for yards with 145 on 20 carries. Ashley O'Neal and Chad Fawley each had 11 tackles. September 19 @ Ferrum College Ferrum 42, Greensboro 10 Ferrum, VA - The Pride opened the scoring with a 35-yard field goal from freshman Brandon Brookshire, but allowed the Panthers to score the next 21 points in the 42-10 loss. Daryl Gholson scampered 16 yards for a TD that highlighted the team's second half opening drive and closed the gap to 21-10. However, it would be the final time The Pride would reach the end zone. Jason Layman became just the second player to rush for 100 yards in a single game. The last GC player to rush for 100 yards or more in a single game was Brian Osborn against Newport News on October 25 of last season (20-101). Octavius Fulton made 12 tackles to lead the team defensively and Kierre Smith and Ashley O'Neal each had an interception. Greensboro, NC - The Braves jumped on The Pride early, scoring the first 21 points of the game before Greensboro fought back to within 21-14. However, Chowan's Chris Dent connected with Jeremy Forbes as time expired in the first half and the Braves held a 28-14 lead. Tommy Waters and Wes Wilder saw equal time at the QB position and each committed three interceptions which led to 14 points for Chowan. Washington, DC - In the season opener for both teams, Catholic - ranked #14 in the country- broke open a 7-7 game in the first quarter with three straight scoring strikes to take a 28-7 lead after one quarter.
