GC Women's Tennis Concludes Best Season Ever
Led by Marnie Greenblatt—the first Pride women’s player to qualify for the NCAA Tournament—the Greensboro College women’s tennis team recorded a 17-3 overall record in 2001. In one year, the team has did an about-face: Last year’s team went 4-12.

The Pride started the year with an eight-game winning streak and never looked back. Shattering several team and individual records along the way, the netters defeated arch-rivals Meredith and Averett for the first time in recent memory.
Coach Pat Williams said this about the team: “The key to our success is our depth. Most schools are strong at the top, but we have talent everywhere. The team finished second in the conference regular season behind Methodist, and will be ranked in the top ten in the region. Even though they did not make the NCAA Tournament, this team will always be remembered for its great season. Without question, this is the best women’s tennis team in GC history, and their accomplishments will be the standard for future teams.”

GC topped off the season with a great showing in the DIAC Conference Tournament. Jennifer Lea  and Meredith Stanley were crowned conference champions. Greenblatt and Karen Adams finished runners-up in their respective flights. Adams and Lea also teamed up to finish second in flight #3 in doubles. In addition, Greenblatt won the Dixie Conference Rookie-of-the-Week award four times this season.

Fittingly, Adams and Lea shared the coach’s award at GC’s athletic convocation. Both two-sport athletes, they played four years of doubles tennis together. Adams and Lea also brought an athletic style to the tennis court. The pair established themselves as Pride career leaders and are both in the top ten in singles and doubles wins in the GC record book.

“They’re successful partly due to determination and a strong will to win,” said Williams. “Jennifer Lea and Karen Adams were a pleasure to coach and a joy to be around.”

The team MVP, however, was freshman Marnie Greenblatt. “Marnie may only be a rookie in college tennis, but she is a pro at her mental approach to the game,” Williams said. “She is the best freshman in the DIAC and is ranked as one of the top ten players in the region.”

The ground-breaking Greenblatt is on her way to rewriting the record books at GC. She had over 20 wins this season (she finished 27-4), which is a school single-season record.
