| The Pride women’s tennis team started
the 2002-03 season with a bang by winning the Guilford College Invitational.
They closed the Fall season with a strong showing at the Atlantic South
Tournament in Sewanee, Tennessee. Meredith Stanley
and
Kate Creasy stood out by advancing
to the second and third rounds of the tournament, respectively.
“Kate did some great things on the court this year,
including winning the Guilford Invitational at her flight, said GC Head
Coach Pat Williams. "Playing
at the number one position, she had to be ready every match. She held her
own against some of the nation’s top players.”
Tough early season competition got The Pride off
to a rocky start in the Spring season and they finished 3-10, good for
fourth in the Dixie Conference. Yet GC had convincing conference wins over
Ferrum, Shenandoah and North Carolina Wesleyan.
The GC women, however, will sorely miss seniors
its two seniors. Blair McGillicuddy
was a novice tennis player four years ago and moved up from number six
in her freshman year to number three this season. Stanley played number
two singles and led the team in wins (10-5) for the second straight year.
Coach Williams said of Stanley: “When it comes time
to select the top-10 all-time players at GC, in my opinion, Meredith should
be at the heart of the group. There’s no better role model in our tennis
program.” |
GC Head Coach Pat Williams on his two
seniors:
Williams on Meredith Stanley:
“Meredith possesses athletic talent, and all the
qualities to be a role model as a student athlete. In my view, Meredith
leaves as one of the top 10 players in GC women’s tennis history. Her leadership
and commitment will be hard to replace.”
Williams on Blair McGillicuddy:
"Blair grew tremendously as a tennis player at
Greensboro College. She arrived with little experience, but progressed
from 6th to third in singles in her career."
