Dave McCain

Pride Head Women's
Tennis Coach

Dave McCain enters his third season as women’s tennis coach at Greensboro College in 2007-08.

The 2006-07 season saw The Pride's Carrie Pacifico being named the USA South women’s tennis player of the year. Playing at the number one flight, Pacifico compiled an 18-3 overall record and a perfect 7-0 mark in USA South regular season action.

The junior's outstanding play highlighted an impressive year for The Pride women. Pacifico won the Meredith College Invitational the past two years and reached the round of 16 at the ITA Regional Tournament last fall.

The 2005-06 Pride team went 7-10 and 3-4 in conference matches. The green and white avenged an earlier loss to Peace College by beating them in the first round of the conference tournament. Pacifico had a breakthrough year to lead the GC women. The sophomore was ranked regionally, and posted a remarkable 20-2 record (a new mark for winning percentage) at number one singles. Following the regular season, Pacifico became the first ever GC women’s tennis player to be named conference Player of the Year.

McCain also leads The Pride men's tennis program and is the director of tennis at the Precision Golf and Tennis Academy at Bur Mil Park.

No stranger to collegiate tennis, McCain was the NAIA National Coach of the Year twice at his alma mater, the University of Illinois-Springfield.

Prior to relocating to Greensboro, McCain spent the previous two years coaching his daughter, Kellie, on the WTA pro tour. Under his direction, Kellie McCain advanced to a #119 world ranking. Prior to that, he was the Academy Managing Director of Saddlebrook International Tennis in Wesley Chapel, Fla. McCain previously owned and directed McCain International Tennis Academy in St. Petersburg, Fla.

"We couldn't be more thrilled to have a professional of Dave's caliber leading our tennis program,” Pride Athletics Director Kim Strable said. “Besides being a great instructor, he's just an outstanding person who is a great fit for our campus community. Dave has a reputation for making average players good and good players great. He's widely respected in the tennis community nationally and is a great asset for Greensboro."

McCain also coached other professional players including former top 20 WTA player Mary Lou Piatek. He has coached high school singles and doubles champions in Illinois and Florida, USTA national juniors indoor and clay court champions (girls and boys).

McCain lives in Greensboro and with his wife, Sue, who is also a former player and coach. His daughter, Kellie, was an All-American at Duke and his son, Danny, was a full scholarship player at the University of Michigan.
