Greensboro, N.C. -- Ryan Edwards
tallied the match's only goal in the 69th minute as Messiah College defeated
Gustavus Adolphus College, 1-0, in the 2005 NCAA Division III Championship
match. Bryan Mohney earned the assist on the play.
"I was able to recognize where I
was in relation to the defenders," Edwards said of the build up to his
10th goal of the year. "Once Bryan got the ball to me it was a pretty easy
short finish."
The title was the Falcon's second
straight and fourth in the past six seasons. MC ended the year 24-0 and
ran its wining streak to 29 games.
"Every year and each team is different,"
said Messiah Head Coach Dave Brandt. "This team had great chemistry and
leadership which brought out the best in the team."
Saturday was an eventful day for
Messiah College. The Falcon women earlier collected the NCAA Division III
championship trophy with a 1-0 victory over The College of New Jersey.
Gustavus Adolphus ended its Cinderella
run at 17-3-5. The Gusties had a number of good scoring chances on counter
attacks--especially in the first half--but could not find the net. The
Falcons out shot the Gusties 7-6. MC had six corner kicks to two for GAC.
Attendance for the championship match
was 1374. Additionally, more than 1,000 viewers watched the men's and women's
finals via streaming video from NCAASports.com.

half. Had we converted, the story could've been different. But that's one
of the best teams in a long time. They deserve all the credit."
-Larry Zelenz, GAC head coach.
"The season we had has been a life
long dream fulfilled. It's a great way to end my career."
-Bobby Kroog, Gustavus
"Our coaches prepared us well this
year. With our winning streak, we had to keep our focus for every game.
We kept challenging ourselves all season."
