Triad World Affairs Council
What is the World Affairs Council?
The World Affairs Council is a non-partisan and non-profit organization that informs the public about political, economic and cultural issues of international scope.
What is its purpose?
The purpose of the World Affairs Council is to enrich our community and our educational system with a keener knowledge of global affairs.
What does the World Affairs Council do?
It enhances cultural enrichment by bringing distinguished speakers to our community to help us better understand international trends, problems, issues, and options for U.S. foreign policy.
How does it differ from other area groups involved in global affairs?
Other groups tend to focus on specific topics such as trade or business. The World Affairs Council's breadth is broader and focuses on political, economic and cultural topics of international scope. It also provides great potential for linkage with other community groups.
How do sponsors benefit?
A distinguished roster of speakers will energize citizens by broadening their knowledge of global affairs. The World Affairs Council puts people on the map of world understanding.
Is the World Affairs Council a new idea?
No. There is a network of more than 80 World Affairs Councils across America linked to the National Council of World Affairs Organizations headquartered in Washington.
Other North Carolina cities - Charlotte, Asheville, Raleigh, Durham - have already established World Affairs Councils.
What about the Triad area?
If anything, the Triad area is very much a latecomer to the idea of a World Affairs Council. This is ironic because more Triad businesses, colleges and universities have a global reach, now more than ever before.
Although opinion polls show that many Americans give low priority to foreign affairs, the stark reality is that we live in a "global village" and had better get to know the neighborhood or be left behind.
