This seminar is the cornerstone of our support structure for new students. The two-credit, First-Year Seminar course takes an experiential approach in introducing the student to the value and meaning of a liberal arts education, the academic skills needed to be a successful college student and the importance of being an active community member. The course is taught by the student's academic advisor, who serves as a significant resource during the first semester.
One important element of this course is the first-year student common reading. Not only do all students read and discuss this book, but it provides the focus for our Friday sessions. The common reading for Fall 2008 is A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Solider by Ishmael Beah.
