Degree: B.A., B.S.
Minors: Yes - Religion / Philosophy / Ethics / Christian Education
Other: Pre-Ministerial
The academic study of religion is an opportunity to reflect intelligently on a universal human phenomenon, rather than an indoctrination into any particular belief system. Religion is arguably the most powerful and pervasive force in the world. Across cultures and throughout history, it has shaped politics, economics, law, social structures, literature, art, and most other aspects of life. Religion factors prominently in discussions of contemporary issues such as terrorism, warfare, poverty, faith-based initiatives, abortion, genetic research, globalization, civil rights, family values, homosexual unions, evolution, capital punishment, and school prayer. A major or minor in religion helps students understand the ways that religious arguments are used and misused within these discussions.
The religion major is designed to acquaint students with, and to help them think discerningly about, the writings and traditions that have served as the basis of theological, ethical and philosophical reflection in western and world civilization. Courses are taught in Bible, theology, ethics, philosophy, church history, Greek, Christian education and the world religions. The program also offers a minor in ethics and supports the campus-wide ethics-across-the-curriculum emphasis. Internships provide opportunities in churches and other settings. Graduates, representing different denominations, have a distinguished record of attending seminary and graduate schools in preparation for Christian ministry or college-level teaching. These schools include Duke, Emory and Princeton, to name a few. Other graduates have found employment in churches, youth ministry, businesses and nonprofit organizations.
Greensboro College holds membership in the North Carolina Religious Studies Association and the Southeastern Commission for the Study of Religion.
