Applying for Financial Aid

Greensboro College is committed to assisting students and their families secure the resources necessary to attend the College through the use of institutional, federal and state funding awarded in the form of scholarships, grants, loans and employment. At Greensboro College, we believe that a quality education is one of the most important investments in your future you can make. Financial aid is awarded on the basis of demonstrated need as a result of filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and through a competitive scholarship program that recognizes the student's academic achievements and talents.

The application process for financial aid can sometimes be confusing and even frustrating, but hopefully our application materials will make the process as simple as possible. We urge you to use these guidelines to be sure you submit everything required in a timely fashion to avoid unnecessary delays in processing your application. Please note that we cannot offer you an estimate of financial aid eligibility until you have been accepted for admission, and your file for financial aid is complete and has been reviewed.


Application Guidelines

Although you can file for Financial Aid at any time, our PRIORITY DEADLINE to receive maximum consideration for  financial aid is:  APRIL 15, 2008. All information must be in our office by this date to receive maximum consideration for Financial Aid. We suggest you file by March 15th to insure your information is in our office by the priority deadline. Filing late increases the risk that funds may be depleted before your application can be reviewed. To file for financial aid:

  1. Make sure you meet the General eligibility requirements that include:
    • Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a program leading to a degree.
    • Be making satisfactory academic progress toward a degree.
    • Not owe a refund or be in default on a student loan received at any institution.
    • Be registered with the Selective Service (if required), and confirm that registration.
    • Provide a verified Social Security number.
    • Be a U.S. citizen or an eligible noncitizen.
    • Demonstrate need or eligibility according to federal guidelines.

  2. Apply for admission.No offer of financial aid can be made until you have been offically accepted for admissions to Greensboro College as a regular student in a degree-seeking program

  3. File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) with the federal processing center if you are applying for need based assisance from Greensboro College including federal, state, and institutional programs.

    You are encouraged to file the FAFSA on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Note:  If you file electronically you will receive a Personal Identification Number (PIN). You can use the PIN to sign the FAFSA electronically. Without a signature the FAFSA will not be processed.
  4. Entering students must complete and submit the Financial Aid Data Sheet.
Additional Forms That May Be Required
  1. Signed copies of your and your parents' federal income tax forms to include all schedules. The tax forms will be required if you are selected for a process called verification. (Please see Financial Aid Commonly Asked Questions)
  2. Documentation verifying untaxed income and benefits received.
  3. Documentation for other family members who are listed as attending college for the upcoming year.
  4. Proof of eligible noncitizenship such as an Alien Registration Card.
  5. Documentation verifying support from the noncustodial parent where parents are divorced or separated. 
The Process

Approximately three weeks after the FAFSA is filed with the federal processing center, the results will be sent to our office, provided you have listed Greensboro College (code number 002930) as an institution selected to receive electronically. This information will be matched with the Greensboro College Financial Aid Data Sheet as well as other documents submitted to our office. Once your admission to the College is verified, a financial aid counselor will review your financial aid application and determine your eligibility for assistance.

If we are uncertain about some of the information submitted, we will request additional information or explanation. Please respond to these requests to prevent delays in the process. After we have determined your information is accurate, you will be sent either an Award Notification listing the various programs and amounts being offered to you, or a letter of noneligibility. If you are sent an Award Notification, you will be asked to review, then accept or decline the program(s) being offered. We must receive your acceptance of the offer before credit can be applied to your student account.

TIPS FOR FILING THE FAFSA ON-LINE

     1.  Open your browser and go to www.fafsa.ed.gov

     2.  Select “Fill out a FAFSA” then follow the on-screen instructions to fill out 
          the application


     3.  Be sure to include the school code for Greensboro College (002930) so   
          that we can receive your FAFSA
information electronically

     4.  Sign the FAFSA.

         You have two options for signing the FAFSA:

       1) You can sign it electronically using a PIN. You can apply for a PIN
             by
going to www.pin.ed.gov.

        2) You can print a paper signature page from the web, sign it, and mail it
            to the
address provided.

NOTE: YOUR APPLICATION CANNOT BE PROCESSED WITHOUT A SIGNATURE
