Work Study
The purpose of the Work Study program at Greensboro College is to assist eligible students who want to earn money toward their college expenses. As a work program, the hours must be worked before compensation can be given. Therefore work study funds are not applied directly to the student account. Do not consider this program when determining the balance owed to the college beyond what is covered by the financial aid programs listed on the award notification.

Work study can be only be awarded if the student files the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and student demonstrates eligibility according to the Department of Education.

How do I find a work study job?

Positions available through the work study program are listed on a Job Board outside of the Financial Aid Office including a job description, skills required, hours available, and the contact information for the supervisor. Students review the job board, find positions which are of interest, and contact the supervisor for an interview. Jobs are limited so we recommend students try to secure employment as early in the semester as possible. Students must show a copy of their award letter to the supervisor verifying their work study eligibility.

Once the student has found a work study position they must complete certain forms provided by their supervisor and submit them to the financial aid office. These forms include:

W-4 - Federal Employee's Withholding Allowance Certificate. This form indicates the employee's tax exemption choice. All student W-4 forms are kept in the Human Resource Office. To make changes or corrections, the student must contact that office.

NC-4 - North Carolina Withholding Allowance Certificate. This form indicates the student's North Carolina exemption choice.

I-9 - Employment Eligibility Verification - This form is required of all employees. The I-9 was developed by the Immigration of Naturalization Service and is used to verify that new employees, whether U.S. citizens or resident aliens, are eligible for employment. The main purpose of the form is to verify that aliens seeking employment are either registered permanent residents, temporary residents, or applying for temporary residency but have an authorization for employment from the Immigration and Naturalization Service to work in the U.S.

Employment Eligibility Documentation: To comply with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, all employees hired after November 6, 1986, are required to provide documents that establish identity and employment eligibility. List of acceptable documents:
1. Driver's License
2. School ID card with photograph
3. Voter's Registration Card
4. U.S. Military Card or draft record
5. U.S. social security card issued by the Social Security Administration
6. Original or certified copy of a birth certificate

Students are not permitted to work on school vacation days (i.e. Fall Break, Christmas Break, Spring Break, etc..) without prior approval from your supervisor and Student Financial Planning. Students may work up to 20 hours per week during the school year.
