ORIGINS: The Fundraiser

Fund raising is something every college President expects to do immediately upon assuming the office. It is a key requirement for the job. But there are fundraisers everywhere: the health and human service agencies, United Ways, Community Foundations, youth organizations. You name it. Everyone and every organization are trying to raise money for some worthy cause.

We all know about John Wesley and his wide array of talents and activities. Here he was, the traveling preacher who could heal the sick, preach to thousands several times a day and still find time to write sermons, booklets, music and whatever. Did you know John Wesley was also a fundraiser?

In his WORKS, he writes: “I finished the little collection which I had made among my friends for a lending-stock. It did not amount to thirty pounds, which a few persons afterward made up fifty. And by this inconsiderable sum above two hundred and fifty persons were relieved in one year.” Wesley personally raised this money to help the poor who were all around him.

But that was not all. After making provision for the visitation and care of the sick, the education of the young and the housing of widows, Wesley raised “a supply of money” to be used to make small loans to those who needed it “in order to carry on their business.” Sounds like the small business loans offered by many banks today.

We know that at this time, more than 80 percent of the English population lived at the very bottom of the economic pyramid — barely providing for basic needs.  Wesley provided a means for them to make small loans (not to exceed 20 shillings, to be repaid in three months). Two stewards in London were given charge of the funds and making the loans.

Yes, John Wesley the fundraiser. So the next time I come and ask you for money for Greensboro College, realize that I am just following an established Wesleyan tradition and trying to be a good United Methodist.
